Catnip Acres is a high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN) clinic that practices in accordance with the current veterinary medicine board laws and regulations. In order to provide affordable prices, we do some things a bit differently than you may be used to. Unlike in a private practice, we ask owners to help with the recovery, or “waking-up” process. Once patients are safely extubated, their vitals are stable, and they have begun to wake-up, we bring them out to the owners in the waiting room to continue the process. Your dog’s safety and wellbeing are always our top priority, and we will never take a pet out to their owner unless it is safe to do so. It’s important to note that every pet reacts to anesthesia differently. Common side effects upon waking up may include confusion, shaking, vocalization or crying, and uncoordinated or sudden movements. Please remember that your pet has pain medication on-board. They do not feel anything under anesthesia and should not be in any pain upon waking up. Their reactions are most likely a result of them being disoriented and confused. This is why we recommend the owner bring the pet’s favorite blanket and be present when they wake up. We find that familiar smells, faces, and voices help make for a smoother recovery. Still, seeing their pet in such condition can be upsetting to some owners. If you are uncomfortable being a part of this process, you may want to seek the services of a private veterinary practice instead. If you think we should change our practices, please consider donating so that we can afford the additional staff and bank of cages necessary for extended monitoring. Our mission is to provide high-quality affordable vet care, and though we don’t want to, we may have to raise prices in order to accommodate clients. We appreciate your support and understanding.
